I only found out today that Mr. Grusky, my former mentor, had passed away. Last night, he somehow appeared in my dream. In the dream, I showed him around my hometown of Seoul and had the chance to treat him to some wonderful food. Curious about how he was doing these days, I googled him, but...
Perhaps his appearance in my dream was his way of visiting those he had connected with during his life. Even if it was just a dream, I was so glad to show him beautiful places and share delicious meals with him. Mr. Grusky, may you rest in peace

No one knew at the time, but in highschool, I was going through a lot of turmoil and pain at home. Garden School was a safe space for me. Mr. Grusky was a significant part of me feeling safe and worthy. He always encouraged me and supported me and helped me realize my potential. I’ll never forget the kind gesture of him baking a pumpkin pie for me. To this day, it’s my favorite pie flavor! Mr. Grusky, I hope you knew how many students lives’ you impacted for the better. Thank you for everything you’ve done and may you rest in peace.

Dear Mr. Grusky,
You were a mentor in the classroom and in the kitchen! Cooking and dining with you and the Stigas are some of my most cherished memories! Your vast knowledge and very fancy ways were always shared with patience and love.
You so generously shared your time and knowledge. You were always teaching!
I will so miss our talks and our laughs! It was so warming when we would chat either on the phone or in person and we would share our silly names for each other. You will always be a cherished friend and a part of our lives!

I had the privilege of introducing Mr. Grusky at the Garden Gala's celebration of his 50th year at the Garden School. During that introduction much of his life was retold and I am therefore including that piece here for others to recall the many facets of his wonderful life and the smiles that he brought to so many people
Let’s go back in time – some would consider it way back – others no so long
A young boy is born in Greenpoint Brooklyn, attends catholic school there and graduates from Bishop Loughlin high school.
After high school, this young boy joined the Christian Brothers - a Catholic religious order for men engaged in teaching.
He then continued his education at Catholic University in Washington D.C. followed by a return to New York, with studies at Manhattan College.
Did work at New School for Social Research followed that with other assignments Manchester, New Hampshire.
With his roots in Brooklyn, New York, he subsequently returns .
Let’s fast forward five years in our young man’s life –
The year is 1969.
50 years ago. Many of you may have only been thoughts in your parents mind, if they were even married then.
The first man lands on the moon, Jets win the Super Bowl, METS win the world series, KNICKS win the NBA championship, RANGERS win the Stanley Cup.
Richard Grusky commences his career at Garden School.
Is there a correlation with Mr. Grusky starting and all the championship events going on? Might be a mere coincidence – who knows but 1 thing - Richard Grusky’s tenure as a champion, has outlasted them all.
Let me take you back to Mr. Grusky’s first days teaching at Garden.
He started teaching history to Garden Students back in 1969 in the room that is now the kindergarten room. I was in Mr. Grusky’s first class.
So, here is this newbie teacher, standing in his new classroom, with only 5 years of teaching behind him The kindergarten room was divided into 3 classrooms and Mr. Grusky was in the middle room.
A fellow history teacher, who some of you know- Mr. Lewis Brody was in the adjacent room. Mr. Brody maintained a unique teaching style in his classroom. He was a visual instructor.
When he taught about the Roman Empire, he would demonstrate chariot races. When he discussed rallies, picketing, civil disobedience, he would likewise demonstrate that.
As you can now picture Mr. Brody is running around next door shouting at his horse, playing Julius Caesar, or on another day, yelling civil disobedience statements.
Welcome to Garden School Mr. Grusky.
Years went by, Mr. Grusky’s learned Garden’s promotion of individual teaching styles, and Mr. Grusky provided thousands of students with a very strong understanding of history, and that be “According to Grusky.”
His goal has been to foster the development of the rational process in students. Memorization is fine, but CONCEPTS and the question “Why?” are better bases for the study of history.
Countless students have enjoyed his teaching, with many of them maintaining lasting friendships for many years to come.
Throughout this 50 year tenure, he has been a Teacher, Department Chairman, College Advisor, Principal of the Upper School, Assistant Headmaster and Acting Headmaster. But to him, his FAVORITE TITLE is SIMPLY TEACHER.
There are several other sides to this complex individual.
The traveler. As I said, Mr. Grusky’s relationship with his students lasts long past Garden. He had been able to spend many summers abroad visiting appreciative students who have taken employment in many different foreign lands.
He has traveled extensively throughout Europe, Asia and much of the US.
Summers certainly weren’t opportunities to relax but rather, chances to explore history even further that he could relate back to the students at Garden.
People familiar with these Garden Galas, also recognize the charitable nature of Mr. Grusky. The hours and hours spent baking pies and cookies each year for the benefit of Garden School.
Who knew this man had such culinary talents. Obviously more and more people are learning that, as the bidding prices seem to increase each year for the desserts.
Personally, I have to say, after becoming a Board member, it was been difficult to address him as Richard. A teacher like this, will always command the respect to be called Mr. Grusky.
After 50 years here at Garden, his presence will always be remembered and is very much appreciated.
50 years and counting. When will this dynasty end??? He has made, and is continuing to make, his own Garden history.
He has always said – he would stay until he had a record no one will break.
And so, with that, Mr. Richard Grusky, any enlightening announcements that you want to make?

Richard Grusky was a dear friend to my parents (nearly 55 years!), a friend to my husband and me, and an honorary uncle to my daughters (and godfather to my youngest). We will miss his spirit every day.
Rest easy, Richard. We hope you are enjoying decadent French food for every meal in Heaven ❤️
