Marie Caulfield Martinez was born on July 1, 1925 to Charles E. Caulfield, Jr. and Mary Waters
Caulfield, the 4th of 5 daughters in New York City. When her mother died in 1934, Marie and
her sisters were sent to boarding school, first to St. Clare Academy in Hastings on Hudson, NY,
then St. John’s Villa in Staten Island and finally to The Convent of Our Lady of the
BlessedSacrament, Broadlea in Goshen, NY.
Upon graduation from highschool, Marie came back to NYC to live briefly with her father and
step-mother. She then moved with her sister, Alice, to a small apartment in Jackson Heights
called Electra Court where they met many lifelong friends. She went to work at United States
Aviation Underwriters Inc. to work for the chairman of the board and retired in 1991. In 1952
she married Richard E. Martinez after meeting at a party on Charlton Street in Greenwich
Village set up by her co-worker and his college roommate. They moved to Forest Hills, NY and
were married 65 years until Richard’s death in 2017.
She was predeceased by her son, Matthew Caulfield Martinez (1962-2016) and is survived by
her son Christopher, daughter Amy, grandson Gary Bavolar, granddaughter Claire Bavolar
Simpson (Brendan Simpson) and great-grandson, Cole Edward Simpson. Also many nieces,
nephews, extended family and friends.
Born in the roaring twenties, she lived through the Great Depression and WWII, the dawn of
rock and roll, hippies, the moon landing, Watergate, multiple NYC blackouts, Yuppies, the
internet, September 11th, Occupy Wall Street, Black Lives Matter, motherhood,
grandmotherhood and great-grandmotherhood. All with dignity, grace, and endless kindness.
A memorial service will be held at Fox Funeral Home in Forest HIlls on Wednesday, November
16th from 2-5 and 7-9pm. Her remains will be interred at First Presbyterian Church of
Southold, NY near her summer home in Greenport, NY with a memorial service there in the
spring of 2023.
