Dr. Verisimo Sanchez, a long-time resident of Queens passed away on Thanksgiving morning after a long illness. He was 91 years old. He was born in Camaguey, Cuba and emigrated to the U.S. in 1962 to flee the communist regime. He recently moved to Tampa, Florida to be closer to his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
After emigrating, he would have to take and pass the medical boards again in his adopted country and began his residency in 1965 at Queens General Hospital and moved his family to Kew Gardens Hills.
His love of children led him to a career in Pediatrics and he had affiliations at St. John’s Hospital, Long Island Jewish Hospital and Physicians Hospital in Flushing. He established his own practice in Jackson Heights, Queens in 1967. He was past President of the Pediatric Society of Queens and received a citation for his dedication to the organization in 2018 presented by the Queens Borough President. He retired from his practice on his 80th birthday.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Angela, and his three children Elena (Coates), Alina, and Jorge Sanchez; five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation be made in his name to the Pediatric Society of Queens.
Funeral arrangements are at the Fox Funeral Home at 98-07 Ascan Ave. Forest Hills, NY on Friday, December 6th. A mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday, December 7 at 9:30am at Queen of Peace Church 141-36 77th Ave. Kew Gardens, NY. Interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Kew Gardens, Queens.
