Obituary of Edward J. Flood
Flood - Edward J., 75, December 6, 1943, passed away peacefully at his home in Forest Hills, New York, on Monday, August 5, 2019. Ed was sustained throughout his life by an unfaltering devotion to his faith and family. He was a generous and loving son, husband, father, grandfather, brother, friend, teacher, coach and colleague. He is survived by his beloved wife of fifty-one years, Maureen (Enright), four adoring children, Eileen (and Bill) O’Connor of Rye, NY, Joseph Flood of New York, NY, Carolyn (and Hector) Hoyos of Ridgefield, CT and Brian (Brittany) Flood of Forest Hills. He is also survived by eight beautiful grandchildren, Erin, William, Patrick and Jeremiah, Sienna, Kelly, Charlie and Teddy who loved to play, swim, read and laugh with their beloved Pop-Pop. Ed was born and grew up in Elmhurst, New York the fourth of seven children of the late Joseph and Edith (Hart) Flood. He is also survived by his brothers, Jack and Regan and his sisters, Rosemary, Anne and Beth. He was predeceased by his brother, Joe. Ed’s family meant the world to him and he was never happier than when surrounded by them at large family gatherings and celebrations. Ed attended Holy Cross High School, The College of Santa Fe, and received a Masters in Education from St. John’s University. A high school basketball all star, Ed attended the College of Santa Fe on a basketball scholarship and cherished his four years living, competing and traveling around the South West. Ed taught, coached and served as Athletic Director of St. John’s Preparatory School (formerly Mater Christi) in Astoria, Queens for over fifty years. He dedicated his life to making a positive and powerful impact on the court and in the classroom and was beloved by all the students who he taught, coached and crossed his path. He was a kind and compassionate educator, colleague and friend who approached life and all those he encountered with a word of encouragement and a smile. He was an exceptionally thoughtful man, who enjoyed a loving marriage, a devoted family and a truly beautiful life. In lieu of flowers donations to The Flood Family Scholarship Fund at St. John’s Preparatory School will be gratefully accepted.
