Obituary of George A. Ferraro

Please share a memory of George to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

George A. Ferraro, age 67, passed away on Thursday, November 30, 2017 at his home in Manchester, NJ.  He was born on October 11, 1950 in Brooklyn, NY to Giuseppe ("Joseph") C. Ferraro and Stephanie ("Sally") Kilbauskas.  George married Debra A. Weidner on August 28, 1976 at St. Pancras Church in Glendale, Queens, NY and was married for 41 years.  George is survived by his wife and their son, Matthew G. Ferraro.

George grew up in Williamsburg, Brooklyn where he attended St. John's Preparatory School.  Following high school, he began a career at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York where he dedicated over thirty-five years of service.  His tenure as a staff director for the Checking division afforded him many close friendships that have become family.  George was first and foremost a devoted son, husband, father, and uncle.  His love for his family was always the fulcrum of his daily life.  Following the death of his father at a young age in 1979, George invited his mother to join their family and live with them for the rest of her days.  In 1982, he and his wife adopted their son and their family's love grew even more.  After the passing of both his brother, Joseph, and his sister-in-law, Maureen, George become a second father-figure for his nieces and nephews.  His love for his family had no limits, and he was the first to drop everything to help a member in need.

George had many personal loves as well.  He was an avid horse racing enthusiast.  His father and mother spent every summer in Saratoga, NY for the racing season, and he continued this tradition with his wife and son, owning several thoroughbred and harness race horses over the years.  He was an avid card player at Atlantic City where he knew all of the staff members by name.  In his youth, George loved to bowl and was on a local bowling league at the former Woodhaven Lanes on Metropolitan Avenue.  Later in life, George would love to take fishing trips with his son and nephews.  After moving from Glendale, Queens to Airmont, NY, George would spend his days caring for his suburban property and enjoying the sun in the pool with his family.

He is survived by his wife and son, his sister-in-law, Suzanne, as well as his nieces and nephews with their spouses and children.  A mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30am on Monday, December 4th at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Church, 110-06 Queens Blvd., Forest Hills, NY.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in George's name to:

St. Joseph's Adult Care Home was instrumental in caring for George's mother-in-law, Margie, who along with his father-in-law, Al, also lived with George and his immediate family throughout his adult life.  The sisters showed George overwhelming love and support as he battled his illness.  The family would also like to provide a special thank you to the doctors, nurses and caregivers at Columbia-Presbyterian who have provided not only healthcare but support for George and his family during both his liver transplant and battle with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.
